Hi,

in Hypersonic there is the possibility to change every sample within a drum program. E.g. one might replace the snare or any other sound of the drumset.

But I can't find a possibility to do this in Halion Sonic. The manual also says: "The mapping of the drum instruments and loop slices cannot be changed."
--> So, do I have to take the drumsets as they have been "organized" by Steinberg? Is there no possibility of replacing certain samples within a drumset?

Greetings from Vienna/Austria/Europe!
Jeff.

Unlike the Yamaha hardware workstations from 20 years ago the latest "Unlimited VSTi Workstation" can not import, map or edit audio samples. It looks like you'll have to buy Halion 4 (if/when it will be released) and hope that it can export something that Halion Sonic will recognize.

But I wouldn't hold my breath. It may be the case that you'll have to try to get a special Halion version from Steinberg that can create sample content for Halion Sonic. You'll just have to get approved by Steinberg executives, sign a NDA as 3rd party sound designer and transfer all distribution rights of your future sound creations to Steinberg. This is at least how it works if you want to edit or create patches for HalionOne.

Hi,
there is indeed no possibility of replacing certain samples within a drumset in the common way. But there are several other more flexible ways to do that.

Here is/are the way(s) I did it

1. Click on the "Layer filter" button to see just the "Layers"
2. Set the "Category" filter to "Drum&Perc" and "Sub Category" to "Drumset"
3. Look for the "Comment" column in the result list of the Loadpage and drag it next to the "Rating" column
4. Listen to all Samples of the different Drumkit-Layers carefully and use the "Rating" and "Comment" columns to mark interesting or promising sounds for further use

If you want to exchange only a few drumsounds:
1. Load the Drumkit-Layer that suits your needs best in the first Layer
2. Load the Drumkit-Layer with e.g. your favorite Snare sound in the second Layer
3. Switch Layer 1 off (MIDI off), use Coarse/Octave to shift your Snare sound (Layer 2) to another key if needed, use the Layer Low- and High Key settings to isolate your Snare sound
4. Switch Layer 1 on again. Now there is one key which will play the old sound of layer 1 and in addition the snare sound of layer 2.
5. To replace the Snare sound reduce the Level of Snare (Layer1) in the AUX section or mix both sounds by ajusting the Levels. Add only Attack or Release with the help of the Amplifier envelope or only special frequencies with the help the filter section.
6. Load Layer 3 and 4 to mix or replace other Drumsounds

Meanwhile I use a complete Instance of HALion Sonic only for Drumsounds. All 16 Program Slots are set to the same MIDI channel. Slot 1 keeps the Bassdrum with up to 3 Layers only for a punchy kick, Slot 2 keeps the Snaredrum, Slot 3 the Hihats, Slot 4 the Toms, Slot 5 ....
The same Samples will be loaded only once into RAM even if used in several Programs or Layers even with several Instances of HALion Sonic, so don't worry about your available RAM. But you have to be careful with redundant Insert effects to not stress your CPU too much.

best regards
Gerrit

Thanks for your replies.

It's a pity that the selection of single samples is not available in Halion Sonic. HS now turns out not to be Workstation, but a high sophisticated preset player rather.

@Gerrit: I'll try this - thanks!!

Jeff.
