Wondering if there is a need for an outboard Hdware compressor anymore?
Since I am running DAW's now.
Have a DBX 1046.

I would say yes, others would say no...

Although I would add that front-end compression probably requires more specialist compressors, rather than a more generic type (if that makes sense?)

The DBX quad thing could be handy though...

USB key number not stored.

Don't mind having it around say for keys or vocal ( not that I do much vocals anyway).
I have a 163x as well, the old one slider unit. Actually a real nice piece.
But if process is better in the PC why have the quad laying around.
Any specific reasons to keep it I may not be 'seeing' ?

Well, as I see it:
Our job as "engineers" is to ensure that the recorded signal is as clean an close to the end result as possible. So every thing we do before the recorded sound is great; saves us time in mixing later. So I am ha huge fan of putting time into gating (drums), compression, DI, EQ and ofcourse mic-placement before recording. Good HW costs a lot tough, so choose wisely when buying.
We have no external compression og mic pres in our studio now, but we had in our old-old-old ADAT (S-VHS) years back, and mixing was a joy back then, so new shiny HW is a the top of our wish lists this christmas.

I would definitely keep the 163x, shame you don't have a pair!

The quad is probably of less use, but then I try to never get rid of stuff, but then I did sell some DS201's recently... Gating drums into a DAW, just not necessary and somewhat dangerous I would say.
