Guys, there is an unofficial fix for Wavelab 5.01b to make it work on Vista.
I found it on the web and it works! Just search google with the words 'Wavelab' 'fix' and 'Vista'.
You need to start wavelab in compatibility mode after applying the fix.
I just thought this was great news for those who could not afford buying the new version 6
and are stuck on Vista.
Jack. |

I'll be darned. Curiosity got the best of me...I installed the Wavelab 5 demo onto Vista, applied this fix, and it worked.
Sadly, as the author had indicated, it won't work with the full version of Wavelab 4, which I stubbornly cling to because of its ability to encode files in MP3 Pro format, which Wavelab 6 has alas abandoned. Well...just one of the reasons I still keep an install of Windows XP.
***update""" Using that fix as a guide, and with a little help from a hex editor to modify two bytes of a .dll file, Wavelab 4 is now up/running properly with Vista. I fully intend to keep it there, for the Mp3 Pro option if nothing else. _________________ Wavelab 6.10

Mp3 Pro is an enhanced version of the Mp3 format...it provides higher fidelity at lower bitrates, which I've found very useful at times, if something that I'm saving doesn't demand the highest quality archiving.
Wavelab 4 and 5 offered, for an extra charge for the appropriate patch, a Fraunhofer encoder that included Mp3 Pro. Support for Mp3 Pro encoding was dropped in Wavelab 6, though the basic Fraunhofer encoder is still available.
The site below describes the format in greater detail:

Can you elaborate on what you did to get Wavelab 4 to work in Vista? What did you do with the 'fix'?
Thanks,

Hi Ian,
In November, I found/downloaded the fix for Wavelab 5 that was mentioned by the person who started this thread, and modified it ever so slightly so that it would work with Wavelab 4 instead.
It's extremely simple. First, a Windows file called comdlg32.dll was modified in Vista--it's why earlier versions of Wavelab crash when trying to open or save a file. Part 1 of the Wavelab 4 fix for Vista involves cutting/pasting the Windows XP version of comdlg32.dll into the main Wavelab folder, and giving it a new name (in this case, comdlgxp.dll) to avoid conflicting with the Vista version of the file.
Part 2 of the Wavelab fix involves a minor modification of a text string that's in a Wavelab 4 file. The file is called CommonVcPh.dll. The text string that's modified is simply a string that reads, "comdlg32.dll." This is modified to read "comdlgxp.dll," so that Wavelab 4 will now look for the Windows XP version of this file during the opening and saving of files.
If you'd like to give this a try, here's a link to the two files mentioned above that you'll need. I modified the text string that's in CommonVcPh.dll myself, using a hex editor to change two bytes, so please rest assured that this is free of any viruses or trojans...and comdlg32.dll was taken straight out of my own Windows XP installation:
(note: file has been deleted because of two recent postings to this thread)
Once the folder is unzipped, open it. Next, copy/paste both of the files that are inside into the main Wavelab folder that's in the Programs folder on your hard drive. A message should display, asking you if you want to replace the current version of CommonVcPh.dll. Answer yes, or the fix won't work.
There's one final, very important step. Right-click on the Wavelab 4 shortcut that should be on your desktop. Select Properties/Compatibility. Under Compatibility Mode, put a check mark beside "Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows XP Service Pack 2." If this step isn't followed, this modified version of Wavelab will refuse to run at all--you'll just see an error message.
I've tried this, using both 32 and 64 bit versions of Vista, and it works flawlessly on each. Another discussion can be found here:
http://forum.cubase.net/phpbb2/viewtopic.php?t=86076
I'm not, in any way, trying to imply that Wavelab 6 isn't worth the upgrade price. The Spectrum Editor alone is worth the purchase price if you do any sort of audio restoration or repair--and everyday operations such as normalization are noticeably faster with Wavelab 6. Hopefully, though, this will make things a bit easier until you feel comfortable making the upgrade.

Hi
I am interested to know if the fix by Bill will work on Wavelab 5 as I don't like the look of the fix I got off the internet so I will not open it? If there is only a minor change to get the fix to work on 4 what is the procedure to get it to work on 5 (without downloads).

Hi, Synthman,
Below is a link for the original Wavelab 5 version of this fix that I downloaded back in November--with a minor modification, this fix was used to create the Wavelab 4 version that you're speaking of. It's free of viruses/malware, just follow the instructions that are included in the zipped folder:
(note: file has been deleted because of two recent postings to this thread)
I never did purchase Wavelab 5, went straight from version 4 to 6. However, on the night that the fix was downloaded, I did test it using a demo version of Wavelab 5, and it worked flawlessly with Vista.

Hi Bill
Thanks for the quick response, I'll give it a whirl.

Rod, you're welcome. In case you haven't read all of the messages in this thread that pertain to the fix, there's one important step that must be followed before this will work with Vista.
Wavelab, once modified using the fix that you've downloaded, won't run at all in Vista without a minor change. Right-click on the Wavelab shortcut icon that should be on your desktop, and select Properties/Compatibility. Next, select "Run this program in compatibility mode for Windows XP Service Pack 2."
If this step isn't followed, Wavelab won't even boot once the two modified files have been inserted into the main Wavelab folder.

Hi....
I'm trying to get Wavelab4 to run on vista and although I have closely followed all the instructions here on how to make it work, it still doesn't wanna work.
I've downloaded the two fix files and copied them to the Wavelab folder, and have changed the compatibilty mode to Windows XP service pack 2.
But when i try to start it i get an error message that says
The procedure entry point ?Exist Equal@TFileName@@UBE_NABVTObject@@H@Z could not be located in the dynamic link library CommonVcPh.dll
What did I do wrong?
Any help would be greatly appreciated

Be certain that you've downloaded the right version, as the fix for WL 5 won't work with WL 4, and vice versa.
Also, the WL 4 fix is meant for the final version of Wavelab 4, version 4.01b. It may not work with previous builds. The same is also true for the WL 5 fix. _________________ Wavelab 6.10

Hi Paul,
I was having the same problem with Wavelab 4.0c (build 95).
Steinberg should sort this out for us - they're not because they think we'll have to buy a new version!
To sort it out follow these steps:
(This fix might work for other versions of Wavelab that crash in Vista and worked with XP)
1:
Download Hexedit from http://www.physics.ohio-state.edu/~prewett/hexedit/
(It's freeware - which works for me! )
2:
Un-install Wavelab and delete the programme's native directory.
(Probably 'C:\Program Files\Steinberg\Wavelab\')
3:
Install Wavelab.
(And restart when told you need to.)
4:
Use Hexedit to open the file 'C:\Program Files\Steinberg\Wavelab\CommonVcPh.dll'.
Click on the find button to find the text 'comdlg32' in ASCII mode - it should be in this mode by default.
Change the found text 'comdlg32' to 'comdlgxp' and save the file.
(Make sure you overwrite the old version!)
5:
Put the file 'comdlgxp.dll' in your Wavelab native directory.
This file can be downloaded from http://www.mediafire.com/?2snhxrimnhn
6:
Check that Wavelab is set to run in 'XP (Service Pack 2)' compatibility mode.
7:
Run Wavelab and cross your fingers.
Good luck!
Sean.

If you're running nothing besides Wavelab 4.0c, as indicated in your message above, then I feel safe in assuming that you're not a registered user of the software. If so, you are not welcomed by this forum...so long.
I wanted to help registered owners of Wavelab 4 continue to use their software with Vista for awhile, but have deleted the download based upon this posting. _________________ Wavelab 6.10

Dear William Hicks,
I am surprised that you have taken the files off 'http://www.mediafire.com/?4qyzqdtzsvk'.
I too wanted to help Wavelab 4 users and don't understand why you have removed the files because of my last post.
This is only harming other users and seems strange to me.
I don't think there is anything wrong with what I've said
- saying Steinberg should fix this problem is not just my view - many others online have said exactly the same as me.
(use Google to search for 'comdlg32.dll' and you'll see!)
It would only take Steinberg a few minutes to put a patch on their website.
Implying that I am using software illegally is strange - just because I use old software and don't wish to endlessly upgrade.
I would also like to quote the following from 'http://www.cubase.net/phpbb2/images/usbkey/usbkey.html':
'Q: I am using Steinberg products not requiring a Steinberg Key. What should I do now?
A: If you use a product which does not require a Steinberg Key, such as Cubase SE 1.0.7, Cubase VST, WaveLab or older plugins, then don’t worry! You do not have to fear trouble because you´re not able to store a number...'
I would like to point out that when I said 'I may not come back to this forum for a while - I don't like it!! '
(Which you quoted out of context)
this was to say I don't have time to spend all day checking for responses and if Paul wanted a very quick response he should email me
- as I check my emails often and think that he would want to get his version of Wavelab working as quickly as possible.
I was also referring to the fact that the GUI on this site is needlessly complex and I don't see why I have to set up a user account just to post a simple message.
The comment was not directed at you - and the presence of the emoticon should indicate that I am smiling as I say it.
If I had a problem with something you'd said I would say so - I have none.
I sincerely hope this changes the way you feel
and I have edited my previous post in case others misunderstand.
Best wishes,
Sean.

Hi Paul,
Good to hear it worked!
Thanks for letting me know.
Just a shame about the icons on the 'Look in' menu and the preview buttons.
Ah well at least it doesn't crash!

vista and wl 5.01b
CD Burn Issue
Works great, however I could not burn CD's or DVD's until I checked "run program as administrator" in the wavelab.exe properties. The CDwizard.exe and MultiCopy.exe would crash. But now all is good.
My rant:
Ex-studio owner here, I have been using WL since WL2 I know the program well. My new computer is a vista machine and I don't edit daily, or even weekly for that matter. So the forced upgrade seems like a bad deal for me. I could use a lesser program, but I am fluid with the WL shortcuts and keystrokes AND I already own it. I have bought WL2,3,4, and 5. Then I move to vista and Steinberg flips me the bird. Nice move, great marketing. It is starting to become the status quo with the big software manufacturers.
How about enticing me to buy your upgrade with say....um..... NEW FEATURES and IMPROVEMENTS like the "make me rich" button, or "polish this turd" switch. I have plenty of turds. Seriously, the new upgrades look cool especially the "automatic loudness compensation for the smart bypass button" (if it works as good as it sounds) I could have used that feature 2 years ago, I just don't need those features now that it is no longer my profession.
AVID, Adobe, Steinberg keep getting bigger (which is great, I love capitalism) but stop making jump through hoops already. I would have paid a nominal fee, say $25USD for WL5.02 Vista compatible upgrade and this thread would have never came about. But some bean counter in the company (most likely fresh out of college) made the decision to not make WL5 compatible with Vista. Oh well, good for me, I still have the $25 bucks in my wallet to buy some pizza and beer.
Just my 2 cents....damn, I'm down to $24.98
Cheers,
McMasters |

sorry to dig up an old thread....but.....
does this "fix" work 100%? ive had Wavelabs 5 for years now.....and recently had to buy a new computer, which had vista alrwday installed in it. So i went and tried this so called "vista fix", and it does work.....
except i cannot render anything to a "wave" file.....i can render to MP3 just fine, but selecting 'wave" crashes my Wavelabs. I even have it in 'administrator" mode when selecting "properties"....but that doesnt work. I just get a stupid windows pop-up saying " windows has to close this program, blah blah blah"...... |
